Nanotechnology is the manipulation or self-assembly of individual atoms, molecules, or molecular clusters into structures to create materials and devices with new or greatly different properties. This can be achieved by reducing the size of the smallest structures to the nanoscale (called the “top-down” approach) or by manipulating individual atoms and molecules into nanostructures (the “bottom-up” approach).

Nanotechnology is expected to be a major economic driver for this century, impacting virtually all industries including healthcare, agrifood, transport, energy, materials (construction, coatings, textiles etc), and Information and Communications Technologies (ICT). It also holds promise for improving the environment- by both reducing waste materials, energy consumption and our dependence on non-renewable natural resources, and for cleaning up existing pollution (environmental remediation).
