In general, the construction sector is responsible for a considerable production of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. More than 50% of all raw materials extracted from earth are transformed into construction materials and products. In Europe, construction and demolition wastes amount to more than 450 million tonnes per year, and heating and lighting of buildings accounts for the largest share of energy use (42%) and produces about 35% of all greenhouse emissions.
Therefore, eco-innovation in the construction sector can lead to significant results in waste reduction, energy efficiency and climate change abatement.
