The development of nanotechnologies and their applications is growing fast. It is expected that in the near future nanotechnologies will enable the rise of completely new materials, products, and processes. Some potential applications are even described as “Sci fiction”, nothing less but revolutionaries.

 

In a timeline perspective, the development of nanotechnologies is expected to undergo the following path:

2001 First generation: Passive Nanostructures
(e.g., nano-structured coatings and nanoparticles)

Now Second generation: Active Nanostructures
(e.g., ceramics, fuel cells, adaptive structures)

2010 Third generation: 3D Nanosystems and “Systems of Nanosystems” (e.g., biomimetics materials and networking at nanoscale and new architectures)

2015 Fourth generation: Molecular Nanosystems
(e.g., molecular devices “by design” and atomic design)
